Mikey King's Eagle Scout Project
Donation protected
The Blind Children's Learning Center is a pre-school that specializes in disabled children, specifically those with visual impairments or blindness. I plan to turn an unused dirt section of the property into a sensory garden which will allow the students to experience nature inside their comfort zone with paths that are easy for white cane travel and wheelchairs.
Children born with disabilities such as blindness often have acute fears of unfamiliar or new sensory input. The garden will allow them to explore via touch, smell, and sound in a comfortable and familiar environment. The Orientation & Mobility (white cane) instructors can use the garden for teaching safe traveling skills and the children in wheelchairs can have access to feeling the plants in the raised beds at their own level.
I chose this project for my Eagle Scout Service Project because I was once a student at BCLC, and they still provide my vision and mobility training. This project is a good way to give back to the Center and their important mission. And any funds raised in excess of what is necessary for the project will be donated to BCLC.
