COVID 19 Resources
WHY: Our nurses and doctors need our help during this pandemic. Under-resourced and overworked, they're being asked to reuse disposable personal protective equipment that may be contaminated. Single use N95 face masks are now rationed and they're mandated to wear the same one for the whole day. This endangers our most valuable asset: the front line healthcare worker. It also endangers all the patients and staff they work with.
HOW: The Mikey Box is made from a large plastic bucket (donated by Mud Bay Pet Supply) lined with heavy aluminum foil and equipped with a UV light source designed to sterilize drinking water while backpacking (Steripen by Katadyn). I've devised a method to work around the Steripen's safety feature so that it can operate outside of water. The Mikey Box costs between $70 to $110 dollars to fabricate depending on the model of Steripen.
My Facebook page @UVMikeyBox will have a "How-To" guide on where to get the materials and how to build it.
The intent of this GoFundMe is to build enough of the Mikey Box in the Seattle area to gain visibility and traction within the healthcare industry so that word gets out to other regions and other countries. I want this to go viral (sorry, bad pun) as fast as possible. Once word gets out, every healthcare facility can make their own Mikey Box.
MONEY: If I get more than the $8,000 requested, I will help other regions start their own Mikey Box production centers and purchase material for them. A 20% of the donated amount will be directed to maintaining and repairing deployed Mikey Boxes.
HOPES: My hope is that qualified medical engineers take my idea and run with it. To test, validate and design a commercial Mikey Box for the next pandemic and for medical care providers in far flung locales (Doctors without Borders, USAid, Peace Corp, Military, etc)
