On the morning of March 9th, 2015 my father, Michael Kupferman was sitting in his living room in Corpus Christi, Texas talking to my mother and brother as he usually did every morning. Suddenly, he was not talking correctly his speech was slurred and words were being misused and he became very confused. My brother took him to the emergency room. We found out that he had suffered a Stroke, specifically called AVM, an arteriovenous malformation which caused bleeding in his brain. He was immediately taken into the operating room and had brain surgery to stop the bleeding. My father spent 5 days in the ICU, with his recovery unknown. I flew from Boston to be by his side with my mother and brother.
My father devoted his life to his family, engineering, education and teaching others. He was a professor and an educator he loved teaching and learning. The stroke has affected his cognitive ability, he cannot express himself which for him is the worst possible outcome. He is unable to say how he feels, what he’s thinking or what he wants clearly. My father is determined and motivated to recover and while he has made tremendous improvements over the last two months, the road to recovery is still very long and expensive.
My father has been accepted into a specialized Neuro Rehabilitation facility in San Antonio, Texas. They only accept 14 people at a time and it is very intense and renowned. He would live at this facility and it will provide him eight hours of speech therapy a day combined with other rehabilitation for one to three months depending on his needs. The goal is to help my father get back to being the husband, father, brother, uncle and educator we all remember him as, and that he still is. His brain just needs to be re-trained.
This facility is not covered by health insurance, and is my family’s responsibility to cover the cost. The monthly expenses incurred for this facility runs roughly around $15,000 for per month. My father is a fighter, and my family and I are fighting with him and are asking for donations in support of his recovery. From the bottom of our hearts we greatly appreciate the help and support.
