Hi all!
I have some heartbreaking news for everyone. My brother Mike suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke (brain bleed) from a ruptured blood vessel due to a fall and hypertensive crisis on September 22nd. Fortunately, my nephew Marcus was there, identified the symptoms, and notified us. In the ER, Mike was very agitated and confused, so they had to place him in restraints. His BP was 200/100. He was sent to the ICU the next day for close monitoring and was treated conservatively with medications to help decrease brain swelling and ultimately lower his blood pressure. On day 4, doctors recommended surgical intervention, a craniotomy (temporary removal of a part of the skull to allow the brain to swell), as they feared Mike's condition might deteriorate. At this time, Mike wasn't showing much improvement.
Mike's vital signs continue to be stable but he is still in and out of confusion, having slurred speech, left-sided weakness (unable to move his left hand), and is restless at times. He is pending a surgery reconsult to see if surgery is still an option.
I am Mike's younger sister. We are a family of 7: my mom (Marie) and 6 children (Mike, me, Mark, MJ, Ivan, and Ninja). Mike is the eldest. Mike has a partner and a 13-year-old son, Paola and Marcus. We grew up like twins as we were only 11 months apart. He could be given an award for Mr. CONGENIALITY due to his sociable, funny, and friendly nature. He loves people. He leaves a mark everywhere he goes and people always tell me how goofy, cheeky, funny, and extremely generous he is. He tells everyone how much he loves them even in his confused state.
I have started this GoFundMe to help Mike’s recovery over the next year with help for maintenance medications, check-ups, and extensive rehabilitation. Mike is the primary provider for his family.
I appreciate any help you can provide, even if it’s just thoughts and prayers.
Thank you all.
