Hi. My name is Mike and I am a 50+ years cardiology, and now also a liver, patient at Duke University Medical Center. Over my lifetime I have had three open heart surgeries and numerous procedures and tests at Duke. I've been able to live a pretty normal life, for the most part, and have worked most of my adult life. Unfortunately, in 2012, I had to discontinue working because I could not keep up the pace. I would have my good days and bad days, as I do now, but I could not count on my health to consistently go to work every day. I was successfully able to get on disability so that I could have a place to live and afford necessities. In 2017, I was diagnosed with Fontan Related Cirrhosis of the liver. Meaning that my heart issues have caused cirrhosis of my liver. I have to continue to see various doctors and have lab work done almost monthly. I usually go to Duke appointments every three to six months to see my cardiologist and liver specialist. Unfortunately, there's not hardly anything left after monthly expenses to always cover these trips. I am hoping to try to raise some funds to assist with the travel expenses, and also extra medications, and miscellaneous expenses.
