Help Mike with his Recovery

Donation protected

Mike is my husband's childhood best friend. I met him six years ago and immediately knew that he had a substance abuse issue. As I started to get to know him more and more, I wanted to help him more and more.

I offered to go to AA with him and he declined. I helped him get his driver's license points removed by driving him to VASAP weekly. These things were just band-aids on a bigger issue that needed to be addressed but Mike was clearly not ready.

Fast forward five years and Mike's aging mom seemed to need assistance in bill paying. I offered to help and quickly realized that the lifestyle that she was living (supporting Mike) was not good for her at all. Things needed to change for both of them and fast.

I reached out to many of Mike's friends covertly before asking him to go to rehab. One thing I found is that WE ALL LOVE MIKE! He is so incredibly funny and witty and a truly loving and caring person. He just had a problem that had to be addressed and all of his friends were so supportive to him before and during rehab. We sent letters to him in rehab and he knew that we were all thinking of him every day.

Mike accepted my request to go to rehab on March 30th and I drove him to Galax, Virginia on April 16 for 45 days of in patient rehabilitation. Here is the video of when he walked in the door.

When I picked him up on June 1, he was literally a new person.

Mike is now living in a sober living home and has been sober for over 4 months! He works hard every day to stay sober and has found an amazing community of people in recovery.

This will be a long journey for Mike. He is in the midst of a lot of dental work being done at the Charlottesville Free Dental Clinic. He has had 7 teeth removed but will need orthodontics and implants once this work is done which is not covered by their services or insurance. Mike has also lost work hours due to Covid and needs assistance paying rent in the sober living home until he gets more work. With so many medical appointments, he has had to take off some work which of course means less pay. All money raised will go directly to pay medical bills aand/or any rent that he is unable to pay with his earnings.

This Go Fund Me is a documentation of how Mike is rebuilding his life after 20 years of substance abuse and all of the medical care he now needs after a lifetime of neglect. This should read as a story of hope and salvation for people who are going through something similar. You can change your life if it is not going how you want it to go, you may just need a little help with logistics:)
