On Wednesday, July 11th, our father fell victim to a violent crime in Oxnard, CA, leaving him with a bullet in his brain... Miraculously he survived (90% fatality rate), but is now suffering the ill effects of Traumatic Brain Injury. His road to recovery will be a long one—involving numerous medical professionals, daily interventions & major rehabilitation efforts.
As he continues to recover in VCMC’s Intensive Care Unit, we are attempting to prepare ourselves for the financial & emotional hardships that await. Upon his discharge from the hospital, we would like to see our dad transferred to a Brain Trauma Rehabilitation Center that specializes in TBI. His Neurology Team affirms that residential admission is the best course of action, as our father would have access to around-the-clock care, a daily regimen of therapeutics, ongoing neurological assessments, and specialized resources for patients recovering from & learning to live with severe brain trauma.
To add insult to injury, this tragedy presented itself during an extremely challenging time in our father’s life... Our dad had been out of work and living off supplemental SDI for the past six months as he recovered from a recent Pharyngo-laryngeal Cancer diagnosis, along with, subsequent surgical removal and oral/facial reconstruction efforts. He was in the final stages of intensive Radiation Therapy—so close to remission—when this misfortune occurred.
For those of you who personally know our dad, Mike, I'm confident that you can attest to what a funny, generous, resilient and unforgettable person he is. Our family is hopeful that, in time, with constant support, we can have him back one day...
In closing, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone for the outpouring of love, support, kind words & prayers during this very painful & difficult time in our lives. We humbly ask for any financial assistance that you can afford to contribute to father's recovery. Your continued support & generosity is unparalleled and we are forever in your debt.
Love--Jayme, Melissa & Nicholette
