Friends,
Many thanks to those of you who have already donated to this 'GoFundMe' effort to send Concrete 5th grade students to participate with North Cascades Institute’s Mountain School in North Cascades National Park.
Mountain School provides a 3-day, 2-night experience for area 5th grade students to learn about the natural and cultural histories of the wild area in their backyard. I know hundreds of people, many of them now in middle age, who remember Mountain School as the high point of 5th grade and that the experience positively changed their lives.
Our community in eastern Skagit County is experiencing hard economic times due to circumstances common to many rural communities. In this environment, it is critically important that our youth have formative experiences which motivate them to learn about and appreciate the special richness of their home watershed and the opportunities it still offers.
The North Cascades Institute provides a very significant price discount for the Concrete 5th Grade students, but the cost is still prohibitive for the School District and many families.
In previous years I helped secure grants through the National Park Service to cover these costs. This year I’m working with the Concrete 5th grade teachers and Parent Teacher Organization to secure the funds directly. The kids earned enough through a Walk-a-thon to make the down payment and are now working to raise the remainder.
Money you donate to this 'GoFundMe' effort will help send the kids to Mountain School in March and any surplus funds generated will help send the current 4th grade students in 2018 .
Donations can also be delivered directly to the Concrete Elementary School, checks made out to the Concrete Elementary PTO. Address: 7838 S. Superior Ave, Concrete, 98237.
I have just completed my first year on the Concrete School Board of Directors and I am excited to begin using fundraising skills I gained at the National Park Service to the benefit of local youth. To this end, we will be looking for opportunities to leverage what you donate as matching funds when we talk to local land management agencies and power generation companies about expanding opportunities for local youth.
Thank you and a very Happy New year to you all!
Mike
P.S. You are all invited to the Party at the Marblemount Community Center - January 21, 2017 at 5pm and to clarify - EVERY dollar we receive through this campaign will go directly to the pay for our Concrete Kids' Mountain School Experience.
