“Do something kind for someone today.”

The MIKE WHITLOW SCHOLARSHIP FUND.
To help minority and disadvantaged ad students.
And a chance for every former student whose career and life he changed to be a little more like Mike.

Mike Whitlow changed lives.
I know because he sure changed mine.
When I met Mike, I was a mailman in El Monte, CA. That’s about 30 miles from most of the ad agencies in Los Angeles. But in truth, it was more like a million miles.
I knew next to nothing of the advertising business. I just had a vague inkling from my college classes at night that I might want to be a copywriter. I didn’t know a soul in the business until a very kind recruiter gave me Mike's name.
Through the advertising school he co-founded, The Book Shop, Mike nurtured and mentored me. Like he did countless other ad students - from every walk of life - always with patience and humor.
His creative footprint on our industry is immeasurable.
To give you just a measure of the man, Mike’s phone message always ended with six words:
“Do something kind for someone today.”
So in Mike's memory, that's just what I’d like us all to do:
Introducing the MIKE WHITLOW SCHOLARSHIP FUND.
A chance for every former student whose career and life he changed… and every agency that benefitted from the talent Mike nurtured… to give back.
All the proceeds will go to a fund to help minorities and disadvantaged students with tuition to The Book Shop.
So that a new generation of digruntled postal workers and more can get their start...and bring even more diverse creative voices to our industry.
Most importantly, it's a chance to do something nice for someone.
Just the way Mike taught us.
