Mike has been helping strays, lost pets and providing essential veterinary care to animals in need throughout his career. Over the past 20+ years, Mike has consistently volunteered his time and the services of his animal hospital to our local Miami Beach community. It is not uncommon for Mike to stop and help an animal in need, even if it is suffering from disease or trauma. He genuinely wants the best for people and animals, no matter what the personal sacrifice might be.
Since the accident on September 20th, Mike has spent the past 4 weeks in hospital in Switzerland where he has already undergone several major operations to his face and spine.
So far his recovery has been slow and challenging, but he is able to communicate and has even been able to stand and take a few steps. He has yet to regain much strength and coordination in his hands and has limited strength in his legs.
This video shows Mike miraculously taking some of his first leg movements on October 4th, which was approximately 14 days following the accident. Although he has yet to regain the majority of his strength and balance, Mike is now able to walk a few feet without assistance.
After four agonizing weeks to regain enough strength to travel home, Mike will return to Miami this week with a medically necessary medevac team, including a specialized flight physician who flew to Geneva from the United States. Upon arrival in Miami, he will be transported via an ambulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital, Ryder Trauma Center to begin what will be months of rehabilitation and therapy on the long road to recovery.
We are asking for your help to support Mike through this enormously difficult moment and challenge ahead.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 for this campaign that will be specifically allocated to help with:
- $33,000 cost to medevac him back to Miami
- Any excess funds would be contributed towards his significant out-of-pocket expenses not covered by his health insurance plan.
We all know Mike is extremely determined to fully restore his strength and health, and to be able to continue his career as a lifelong community vet in Miami Beach.
We all look forward to the day that we can hear about Mike performing a life saving surgery on someone's much loved pet, to be able to have full use of his hands and legs, and hopefully, to riding his bike as well!
Thank you for your contributions, no matter how large or small.
