Mike Ohrn’s Horns
We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our son, and Tom’s brother, Mike who passed away unexpectedly from cancer. He was a talented musician, teacher, band director and a happy young man.
Music was Mike’s passion and he was an accomplished French horn player. He had worked long and hard to achieve his goal of being a music teacher at the Arizona Leadership Academy (ALA) in Gilbert, Arizona. His desire was to share his love of music with a new generation of young students. Whether it was writing music, just jamming, being part of the “pit” in any musical production, teaching at band camps throughout the Phoenix area or doing studio work, Mike always gave back to his community.
At the time of his passing, at the age of 31, his home contained a variety of his personal instruments. In his honor they have been donated to ALA. As with most schools’ music programs there are more potential musicians than there are instruments.
To that end it seems a fitting tribute to Mike’s memory to establish a fund to purchase instruments for his students who would likely not be able to pursue what Mike enjoyed the most…making music. In a cruel twist of fate the instruments will go to kids Mike will never have the opportunity to teach again.
American Leadership Academy (ALA) is a non-profit public charter school that relies on fundraising to provide the instruments and supplies they need for their students. ALA has a band program that does not directly receive money from the state and needs support to better serve their students. They strive to give all students an opportunity to participate in a quality music education. Currently there are approximately 150 students in the band program, of which 40 participate in the marching band.
Our goal is to raise $30,000 to purchase instruments. Your contribution will keep Mike’s legacy and passion alive through his students!
