Recently, our dear friend Mike Messick had a serious stroke while in Florida carrying out missionary work with his church. After some time, Mike’s wife Betsy was able to get him back to North Carolina but the stroke he experienced left him struggling to do so many things that had come easily before and were critical to life as he knew it — he could not swallow or eat, talk or write, and walking or moving across the room was very difficult.
Fast-forward to today, and Mike is making progress — he has worked very hard with different specialists to gain the ability to get around and to say a few words – like his family members’ names, write his first name and move across the living room on his own. He is not yet able to swallow or eat but his doctors are hopeful that he will be able to do those things again. As Besty put it recently, “we know he is improving, but it really is in very small increments, and will take many, many months.”
As you can imagine, Mike cannot at this point carry out the work he loves as a realtor and the experience has led to daily appointments with many different kinds of caring specialists who are determined to help him gain life as he knew it before back again. Betsy, Jessica and Jacob are a constant positive posse for Mike but they are also facing many current and future medical bills, for occupational therapy, recreational therapy and speech therapy, testing to determine what caused the stroke in the first place, and recovery from the initial treatment and hospitalization.
They are trying to qualify for disability through Medicare, but it is a process that takes time and even numerous rejections and they have not yet received positive news on that yet. They would never for a moment complain, but there are financial realities that they are facing, and that’s where we hope you can help.
