Here’s a brief synopsis of what happened:
On March 24, 2018, my wife Tracy was struck down crossing the street in Oregon by an 18 year old with NO license and NO insurance. She suffered multiple fractures and unfortunately a severe TBI. She will never be the same again....Our insurance has paid for a lot of the costs, but it has still amounted to over $32,000 out of MY pocket for legal and unpaid medical bills. Now, because of an insurance "gap" of two full months ( resulting from the cessation of our former insurance coverage to Medicaid coverage ) there is now an outstanding balance of nearly $25,000 that has been turned over to a Law Firm Collection Agency.
Social Security will NOT help us in any way ( I've tried twice ) because they consider my income as "too high".
They will not look at Tracy independently although she has no visible assets.
I have already gone through over $32,000 in legal and medical fees this past year and another $25,000 would go a long way to breaking me.
I applied 3 MONTHS for Medicaid BEFORE her former insurance ended ( the minute I learned of the problem ), and it took 6 MONTHS for Medicaid to become official.
They often will do a 90 day retroactive payment, but because I am considered "not impoverished", they only did a 30 day retroaction.
Had this been a $4000 or $5000 payment, I would've paid it and been done with it.
But another huge hit is just too much right now.
Not to mention my poor wife will NEVER be nearly the same person.
