Mike Clooney Medical Fundraiser

In January of 2014, Michael Clooney suffered a seizure in his sleep. When rushed to the hospital after being resuscitated by his girlfriend, Lisa, a CAT scan revealed a mass in his brain. After undergoing a biopsy it was determined that Mike had a Grade II Oligodendroglioma. He underwent 15 months of chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor and relieve the pressure it was creating in his brain. Operating to remove the tumor at this time was impossible due to its size, but the chemo seemed to have helped. Mike and Lisa continued to live their life together and got married in March of 2016. Mike occasionally suffered from seizures due to the tumor and was being monitored with MRIs every 3 months. Mike’s tumor began to regenerate and after another biopsy the tumor had progressed to a Grade III Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma in December 2016. So his oncologist suggested radiation. He began 8 weeks of radiation in January of 2017 which resulted in a major decrease in the mass of his tumor. Things seemed to be looking up for Mike and Lisa. They were soon to welcome the birth of their first child in July of 2018. Two weeks before their baby was born Mike’s oncologist suggested he have surgery to finally remove most of the tumor. It had started to regenerate again but since it had shrunk tremendously after the radiation treatment the previous year, his team of doctors felt he was a great candidate for surgery. Considering the impending birth of their baby the doctors agreed the surgery could stand to wait a couple of months. Matthew Michael Clooney was born on the morning of July 6th, which coincidentally is also both his grandfathers birthdays as well. Mike went in for brain surgery on October 15, just 3 months after bringing home his baby boy. The surgery went well and the surgeon was able to remove most of his tumor. Soon after Mike had begun experiencing a complication from the surgery. Spinal fluid began building up around the incision site and could not be successfully drained without further hospitalization. Mike returned to RI Hospital two days after Thanksgiving to undergo a Lumbar Drain. For 5 days the spinal fluid was slowly drained through a spinal tap in his lower back. He remained in ICU for 8 days until the spinal fluid was no longer collecting around the incision site and everything was healing correctly. Mike and his family enjoyed their sons first Christmas thinking the worst was behind them. Mike finished his 8 week radiation therapy following the surgery and subsequent hospitalization. The new year was beginning and the only thing left was a 6 month chemo regimen to finish his post surgery therapy. Feeling short of breath and lethargic, Mike thought perhaps he was run down from radiation or perhaps suffering a chest cold. After a trip to the emergency department it was quickly discovered that he was suffering from multiple pulmonary embolisms. Both of his lungs were filled with blood clots which originated from his legs. He was back in the hospital again for another 5 days. After recovering from yet another set back Mike is finally ready to start the final stage in his post surgery treatment. The chemo therapy will be broken down into 6 week sessions. Mostly taken at home in pill form, Mike will only go to the hospital 2 times in each 6 week session for intravenous chemo. Because the chemo drugs have no generic counterpart it will cost Mike and his family $2000 for at least the first 6 week session. The cost will be assessed again at the beginning of each 6 week session until he meets his deductible. He started this treatment in March and hopes all the bumps in his road to recovery are over. Any help towards all the medical bills that have accumulated will be greatly appreciated. There is also a fundraiser being held by friends on Sunday April 14, 2019 at the Hibernian Hall (2 Wellington Ave. Newport RI) from 2:00-8:00.
