I am opening this crowdfunding on behalf of my brother Mike and his partner Meaghan.
They have recently gone through some traumatic and destabilizing events, and need help to start their lives over after escaping an abusive and unsafe home, moving from Ontario to Alberta.
Specifically and most pressingly, they need help paying off accumulated debt from financial-abuse; further help would be to ship their computers that they had to leave in Ontario to Alberta, covering costs of medications and transportation for appointments, and hopefully therapy to process through trauma.
- Any support now helps them, as their situation is not secure yet and they are receiving ongoing harassment and threats.
A little more about what happened:
Mike lived in Ontario his whole life with our mother and stepfather - family that were supposed to be his primary caregivers, as he was on ODSP and their dependant.
Last Spring, Meaghan moved provinces and shipped all their belongings as well to live with him and the family.
However, the home environment became increasingly precarious, unsafe and abusive.
- After months of being threatened with homelessness and further harm - and after Meaghan had finally secured social support while they were looking for work as well - in January 2026 they both had to urgently leave under Police protection, and were not allowed to take almost any of their belongings by the family, except what they could fit into one suitcase and tote bag, and their two pc towers -- no peripherals, collections of important items, clothing, etc.
- They were able to get assistance to leave the province and move to Alberta where they had secured a place they could stay, while they are starting from scratch.
- Further, Mike has ~$10, 000 of accumulated debt from the financial abuse he experienced over decades from family. Without a job yet he is unable to pay that off, as well as having no income to cover basic needs and healthcare, which he is actively trying to resolve by applying everywhere he can conceivably work.
- Mike is unable to apply for social services until he has lived there for a year, and Meaghan is starting over again in less than a year, so they are both trying to find work while managing complex health conditions and depending fully on limited resources from the last trusted family we have (Meaghan’s family and our Father and step-mother).
How any financial support will help them
- They need help to get their computers shipped from Ontario to Alberta; this could also give further opportunities for work.
- Help with covering medications for both of their complex health needs, as well as get therapy to process the trauma and abuses of the past year (and more)
- for transportation they will need to use public transit, and ideally they could eventually replace their bicycles
- Anything above their current goal, they would love to try and start replacing some of their lost items that were especially valuable and important, that they were forced to leave and cannot get back:
- sewing machines and leather working tools,
- clothing,
- replacement tech for their streaming setups
- basic necessities to be covered while they are unemployed
