November 2, 2017 changed the lives of our family forever. This was the day my sister was placed on a transplant list for a new kidney at only twenty years old.
Mikal's journey began a few months ago when a doctor took notice of her frequent kidney infections and severe symptoms. This doctor determined that what we believed to be kidney infections were actually Mikal's immune system attacking her own organs. This led to an array of other blood tests, several doctors, two biopsies, and two hospitals stays over a few weeks. While they do not know exactly why her body is attacking her kidneys, the fact remains that she only has 37% function and a kidney transplant is imminent. For now, she will be attending numerous doctor appointments and have several blood drawls every month in preperation for her transplant.
Mikal is a hard working college student with a heart bigger than anyone I know. Even with this grim diagnosis and the pain, fatigue, and nauseau she faces everyday, she has smilied throught it all and kept her head high because she refuses to let her kidney disease win. While she, and we, wait for a match to be found (a process that could take three to five years) we will be raising money to help cover the cost of her transplant. The transplant will cost close to $35,000 and every penny counts. Please help us raise funds to help with her transplant and future medical costs as she will require on going medical care for the rest of her life.
