My name is Miguel Sanchez I am an eighth grader at Alonzo de Leon Middle School. I am an A&B honor roll student. I enjoy school, my hobbies are gaming, coding, and fixing computers. My favorite subjects are math, science and history. I am currently involved in extracurricular activities such as Band, sports, and UIL. (football, soccer, track, golf, e-sports, and number sense) I am humbly asking my community for help in attending a once in a lifetime experience which unfortunately my parents can’t afford.
On March 9, 2024 I will travel to Washington, DC, to take part in the Close-Up Foundation’s Washing, DC, Civic education program along with fellow students from Alonzo De Leon Middle School. This program gives students the opportunity to experience their government in action and gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to be engaged citizens. I will be attending various small workshops, a variety of hands on activities, and debates with other students. I will learn to engage with my peers will I learn about my country. I will be exposed to different attitudes and perspective in hopes to also make new friends to last a lifetime.
This program is run by the Close-Up Foundation, the nation’s leading nonprofit, nonpartism, civic education organization. A little information about the foundation is that they were founded in 1971 and since then have brought nearly one million students from around the country to experience firsthand the history, politics, and culture of the nation’s capital.
The program cost per student is $2,219.00, and is all inclusive of: travel expenses, academic workshops, meals, lodging, and truly, the experience of a lifetime! Because civic education is for everyone, and not just the most privileged, I hope you are able to lend a hand in making this valuable educational program available to all students, regardless of financial background.
