Miguelito is a 6 year old, sweet, joyful, loving boy whose life changed in July 2021 when he started to develop episodes of vomiting. After visits to doctors and tests to figure out why he was vomiting, he was ultimately found to have a brain tumor in October 2021 that had also been causing a dangerous build up of pressure in his brain. Thanks to the strong advocacy of his parents, Miguel and Erika, and the prompt action of Miguel's medical team, he underwent surgery at a private clinic to remove as much of the tumor as possible on October 21, 2021. Results of the type of tumor he has- which will determine what additional treatments and any additional testing he will need moving forward- are still in process. While the road to recovery is long and full of uncertainty, we are relieved he was able to get the life-saving surgery he needed when he did. As more details are known, we will keep those interested updated.
I had the unique privilege of meeting Miguelito's dad, Miguel, on the 10th annual medical mission trip to Tena, Ecuador through the International Neurology Foundation. I worked with him and many other talented and dedicated people (medical residents, pre-med students, adult and pediatric neurologists, pediatricians, nurses, EEG technicians, interpreters, coordinators, and countless other volunteers) to provide neurologic care to the people in and around Tena. Miguel's sense of humor, positive attitude, and infectious laughter was an extra highlight of the trip - for me and I'm sure for everyone he encountered, including patients, parents/families, and other volunteers. I can only imagine the love and laughter that permeates Erika, Miguel, and Miguelito's home. The dedication that Miguel, as a medical interpreter, and his wife, Erika, as a pediatrician, have demonstrated in all that they do to serve and help others is admirable and humbling.
During this incredibly difficult time, I hope that we as a community can bring the same love and support to Miguelito, Erika, and Miguel in any and every way we can.
Thank you in advance.
