McKenlyn, now known as Micki (or Mighty Micki!), was born on September 17, 2014, with bilateral atypical clubfoot. Atypical clubfoot is quite rare, adding neuromuscular involvement, requiring specialized care due to the severity and complexity of these feet.
At only two weeks old, Micki had her first set of full leg casts applied. Micki just recently turned 3 years old, and during these 3 years, she has had over 25 sets of casts, multiple relapses, hundreds of hours of PT, many days spent traveling, and 3 surgeries involving her achilles tendons. Last spring she also had to have spinal surgery to detether (or free) her spinal cord, soon followed by more casts in St.Louis.
Despite the last three years of intense treatment, Micki has failed to make the progress her doctors had hoped for at this stage of the journey. In addition to the casting and surgeries, Micki has spent much of her life in her boots and bar brace for clubfoot-for 23 hours a day. It sure hasn't been easy!
While this little girl has been through more medical procedures in her 3 years than most people have their whole life, you wouldn't know it if you met her! She may not always be the most willing patient (who can blame her!?), but she has been a fighter. Thus, her nickname...Mighty Micki! Through it all, she still remains the bubbly, life of the party, and fearless Micki that we all have grown to love.
What can we do for Micki now? Where do we go from here to get her out of the cycle of casting and relapsing? After much researching and networking her family has found an alternative brace for clubfoot, custom made for each and every baby or child. The orthotist prosthetist, and designer of this brace, is located in Wells, Maine. This is currently the only place in the United States where such braces are available for children who may benefit from customized care and fitting. This visit will require Micki to have daily visits for a week and receive a new custom-fitted brace for 4 consecutive days in order for the braces to have the intended outcome. That isn't a minor endeavor...
Let's help Micki's family get her there and get these braces made! Micki's family have been through a lot throughout Micki's journey. This trip that is needed to Maine, is something that is necessary for Micki to make the next step (literally and figuretively) in her clubfoot journey. She is at a crucial stage of her growth and development and this trip with the bracing could be a game changer for Micki!
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1. Prayers. First and foremost, we ask that you pray for Micki, her parents, her doctors, her therapists, and orthotists. Pray that they work together to achieve the best possible outcome for this sweet girl. Her family believes your prayers have already moved mountains for her.
2. Donate. If you have the means to donate any amount, please know just how much her family appreciates and is beyond grateful for each and every dollar donated to help reach our goal. Micki and her family are immensely grateful for the thought of having help in making this trip and visit for Micki possible.
The funds that are being raised through this gofundme campaign will be used dollar for dollar to offset Micki's trip to Maine in order to receive the world-class care that she so desperately needs. Specifically, these funds will be used to pay for airfare for Micki, her mom and dad, lodging, and medical costs for the daily doctor visits/braces while in Maine for a week. The projected goal, may not be enough to fully cover the travel and medical costs, but boy would it help!
Currently, the trip to Maine is scheduled to take place the week of October 15th, so it is quickly approaching. The fundraising of money for Micki's trip to Maine is something that can make a huge difference for Micki and her family. The gratitude they have in advance for any potential donor, is immense.
3. Share! Please share Micki's Journey with others! Share on facebook, email, or whatever way you wish to share her story. She is an inspirational girl, who continues to leave us all in awe with the way she fights through every obstacle.
Please help Micki get to the end of her clubfoot journey. She is bound and determined to get there... and Mighty Micki undoubtedly will!
Thank you so much,
Mighty Micki's Uncle Drew
