Mighty Mason is a caring and fun loving 7 year old boy that has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP) after surviving a traumatic birth. As part of living with CP, Mason continuously works with a team of OT/PT therapists to help manage his muscle spasticity and tightness. One of Mason’s favorite things to do in therapy is ride the adaptive bike, so we recently took Mason to an adaptive bike expo to see what was available for us to use at home. Mason fell in love with a trike that he was just big enough to ride, and he took off on it like he had been riding it for years!
Unfortunately we discovered certain adaptive equipment, like bikes, are not considered medically necessary. Even though riding the adaptive bike in therapy has proven to help maintain and progress Mason’s physical health it is not covered under medical insurance, and that leaves us with looking for ways to cover the cost out of pocket.
The trike that Mason test rode will accommodate him for years to come since he was riding it on the lowest setting. It is considered custom with many added safety features that we feel need to be maintained, which prices out around $2,000. We’ve been checking for outside funding to help with this cost, but for various reasons everything we’ve pursued thus far we don’t qualify for assistance.
We would love your help with putting a big smile on this little boy’s face by getting him a bike of his own to ride this summer. Any amount given adds up and is a gift that we are thankful for. We hope to order the bike by the end of April so there is ample time to get it and enjoy it for Minnesota’s bike riding season.
