Let's help Vanessa, a 20 year old incredibly focused, passionate and loving soul achieve her dream of continuing her education and becoming a midwife. Vanessa will be attending the Midwives College of Utah (MCU) starting Fall 2020.
I found Vanessa through the Tacoma Urban League. Perusing their website, I found Vanessa's Butterfly Birth and immediately I wanted to know more. Exploring her website, it became clear to me that Vanessa is driven and passionate, and I wanted to know how I could possibly help her.
After sending what I hoped would not be too strange or too random of an email, Vanessa called me. That phone call affirmed all of the feelings I had about how much her mission resonates with me. She is an advocate for all women, and as a doula woven into the small community of Tacoma she is making a huge difference for pregnant women and mothers of color. I couldn't help but smile as Vanessa described herself as "a shoulder to lean on" and "an advocate" because I could just sense that it was true. After all she already felt like someone I could talk with as a friend.
But as a doula, there is only so much Vanessa can do, and her biggest barrier right now is the prohibitive cost of becoming a midwife. Vanessa wants to become a midwife so that she can "intervene with real power and purpose" for women in Pierce County's black community.
My phone call with Vanessa was refreshing. Going into it I wasn't sure if it would be difficult or uncomfortable but it was neither. Vanessa was willing to pull back the curtain for me a bit and spoke with me about the ripple effect of struggles in the black community. She said "we are trying to connect our community together but are getting hit from all angles" she talked about how, even after overcoming the medical disadvantages that black women face, by no fault of their own, in pregnancy and childbirth, families who then also lose their father are even further disadvantaged.
I hope you will donate and help make a contribution to this woman's education, and I hope you will also share this fundraiser. Vanessa is truly going to change Tacoma for the better, improving the birthing experiences of mothers in our community and being a source of love and strength for us as a family of people.
