Help students at Linkhorne Middle School

Donation protected
Please help the students at Linkhorne Middle School realize their goal of having their school newspaper printed this year along with a literary journal to showcase their writing.  A school newspaper gives students a voice in what is happening in their school and community. It is authentic work; the same work that adult journalists do. Students get feedback from their peers who read the articles. They are also instrumental in making changes to the school environment.

Last year, my niece Elizabeth Short - a middle school teacher in Lynchburg - started a school newspaper for her students. The first iteration was published online, and was less accessible to their parents and other relatives. However, when published and printed (on real newsprint!), the students picked up their pens and started to write. Having this "real life" paper edition really drove engagement!

Elizabeth didn't get funding this year to have the newspaper printed and the students are so disappointed. Their parents loved the print edition because it was more accessible to them. Elizabeth is an amazing creative teacher and has gotten many awards for her innovative methods. Please donate what you can towards helping these deserving students publish their newspaper.

With these funds, Elizabeth would also like to publish a literary journal twice a year, allowing everyone at Linkhorne Middle to get involved. This journal will be for the entire school.Work from all staff and students: art, poetry, or prose. This encourages students to express themselves and to be published side by side with the adults in the building, providing a strong sense of accomplishment and pride in their work.

In order for this to have a strong impact, it needs to be printed. We have published online, but there are many restrictions including a lack of access for parents and community members. Online, only a few people read what was written and students quickly lost interest. When the first edition came out in print, students took up their pens again and wrote even more than before.
