A project in Mid Wales to get memorial plaques for air crashes, military sites, and maintenance of existing memorials in the Mid-Wales Region.
On the 10th February 1942, Lockheed Hudson V9127 was on a fuel consumption test flight, when it crashed near Ponterwyd, near Aberyswyth.
The aircraft was crewed by -
F/O David Campbell Anderson (pilot) RAAF
F/Sgt Gordon Robert Duncan (obs.) RCAF
Sgt John Hammond Harker (WOp/AG) RAFVR
Sgt Ronald Hodgson (WOp/AG) RAFVR.
All were killed in the crash. F/O Anderson and F/Sgt Duncan were buried in the cemetery in Aberyswyth. Sgt Harker was laid to rest in Hebden, and Sgt Hodgson buried in Norton.
My goal for Mid Wales Memorial Project , would be to get a memorial stone/plaque erected at the crash site.
I have the backing of the Royal British Legion, The Royal Air Force, The Royal Canadian Air force, The Royal Australian Air Force, Local MP, and many people, from around the world. I have managed to make contact with Sgt Harkers daughter, who was 10 months old when her father was killed. The project has also had coverage in local newspapers, in both Wales, and Australia, the latter helping me make contact with family members of the Pilot, F/O Anderson.
V9127 is only the first project. I am also already working on a secondary memorial to Hawker Hunter XJ635 which crashed outside of Aberystwyth on the 4th May 1976. The crash killed the pilot, F/O Winton Irvine.
After this, I would like to move on to further air crashes, and get memorials erected at the various crash sites around the area.
Using a local stonemasons, James Memorials, I am looking at getting a black polished granite plaque, erected at the crash sites, secured to a locally sourced Welsh stone.
The cost per memorial will be £595 plus VAT if only the plaque is required
£995 plus VAT if plaque and stone is needed to be sourced.
