Right at the start of COVID, my mom had found out she had cancer. After a few tests, her doctors informed her that she would be battling Metastatic stage 4 lung cancer. Metastatic stage 4 is a type of cancer that spreads from its site of origin to other parts of the body.
At first, she was scared. She won't admit it, but I could hear it in her voice. She wasn't sure how she could get through this amid a global pandemic. I had set up a request for friends to mail bomb her (thank you to all those who sent her cards and gifts)! It was AMAZING! She really felt all the love and support. That simple gesture sure did help propel her into her fight. She was scared but ready. For the last couple of months, she has continued fighting with countless rounds of radiation and chemotherapy.
About a week ago, she finished her final rounds of radiation and chemo. Things were looking up. She was tired (which is expected), and has had some trouble with appetite, but has never complained!
A few days ago, she lost the use of her right arm and promptly scheduled an appointment to find out what was wrong. Her doctors expressed concern about a possible stroke and suggested she go to the ER immediately. Upon arrival at the ER, and after some additional tests, she did not have a stroke. The cancer has spread to her brain.
Having cancer sucks. Having cancer during a global pandemic? Even suckier. Mom now will be going back to treatment to take on cancer in her brain.
Every day she is getting more mail, but this time it is not the fun mail-bomb from the start of her fight. The bills are piling up. I would have loved to throw a HUGE benefit for her with everything she loves! Games, prizes, bands, the whole shebang! (and maybe a few cases of Busch Lite!) Sadly, due to COVID, we cannot do that right now. I can't even tell you how helpless I feel, not being able to be by her every day, go to treatments with her, and hold a benefit to assist with her bills.
