Mickey Mann died a week before his 65th Birthday. He left behind family and friends who loved him, but almost no money. Without help he'll receive a council funeral, with no chance to bring his family down from Aberdeen and give him the goodbye he deserves.

We're asking for something simple: if you can, please donate. If you can't, please share this page.

If you knew Mickey, you'll already be smiling. He was a legendary sound engineer who worked with Orbital, Basement Jaxx, Aphex Twin, Moby, Rachid Taha, System 7, Megadog, The Shamen, Drum Club, Meat Beat Manifesto, Ultramarine, Curve and many more. The people on stage got the applause. Mickey made them sound like that.

He was a proud Aberdonian with a near-supernatural gift for pool, often leaving everyone else wondering why they bothered. He loved football and chess for the same reason - the strategy, the patterns, the way a game could think. He had an encyclopaedic mind, a sophisticated ear, adored insects (he once stopped rush hour traffic outside Sadlers Wells to let a caterpillar cross the road), loved plants and flowers so much his balcony once won the Islington in Bloom prize, collected esoteric art, and cooked a mean curry. He believed in synchronicity, could tell a story so tall it needed planning permission, and hated pizza almost as much as he hated the Tories. He fronted his own band, Pressure of Speech, making dark, beautiful electronica championed by John Peel.

Illness slowly took away his ability to tour, and with it a huge part of the life he loved. In the end he died with very little.

We're trying to make sure that doesn't define his final chapter. The money raised will pay for Mickey's funeral and memorial to help bring his family down from Aberdeen so they can be there to say goodbye.

If we reach the target, we'll be able to do more than provide the bare minimum. We'll be able to give Mickey the kind of farewell he earned. If the fundraising goes beyond that, any extra money will help create an even more fitting celebration of his life, bringing together the people who loved him to remember him properly.

We've created this Facebook group as a place to remember Mickey. Please feel free to share photographs, stories, memories and anything else that captures the person he was.

As plans are confirmed, we'll also post details of the memorial arrangements here so everyone can stay informed.
