Michigan Seven Week Debate Program

Hello!

My name is Samantha Roman, and I am currently a sophomore at Winston Churchill High School. I am a varsity debater on the national circuit and I have been debating since my Freshman year. I joined debate due to my passion for learning, problem-solving, and team activities. It has already transformed the way I think about, and operate in, the realm of today’s social landscape.

I’m raising money to attend the University of Michigan’s 7-Week Debate Program this summer. The Michigan Debate Institution is one of the most comprehensive and rigorous programs in the country. The level of competition and coaching offered is unlike any other available. The selection to attend this program is highly competitive, and I am incredibly lucky to say that I have been accepted.

However, the cost of attendance is currently more than my family can provide. Despite their support for my passion, the large sum required for me to attend the prestigious camp cannot be completely amassed by them alone. I have been working to earn and prove that I deserve the funds being pulled for me to spend my summer across the country.

To say that debate is just an activity would be a gross understatement. Participating in debate grants me an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, challenge myself intellectually, and overcome many barriers in public speaking and personal advocacy. Debate has given me the courage, resources, and skills to realize my ambitions, and ultimately, open new doors for my future in college and beyond. It is my dream to be nationally competitive and obtain a bid to the Tournament of Champions next year. While it may not guarantee it, Michigan will equip me with the necessary foundation of education and practice to achieve this aspiration.

I am unequivocally devoted to pursuing debate and using my skills to create tangible changes in and out of the academic sphere. Any contribution to this cause is so greatly appreciated and will be used to cover room, board, travel, and tuition.
