Hi friends,
Since December 9, I've been dealing with a serious and disabling medical situation affecting my eyes to the degree where I spend most or all of the day with my eyes closed. I'm currently on unpaid leave from work, seeing multiple specialists, and facing significantly increased medical and living expenses while we try to get clarity and stability.
Right now, I need help bridging the next couple of months while I focus on treatment and recovery.
Here are ways you can help, if you're able:
Donate to my mutual aid campaign. Even small amounts truly make a difference. To give a sense of impact:
- $25 covers one package of preservative-free eye drops. I go through these every two weeks.
- $40 covers a single doctor's copay. I'm seeing a lot of doctors right now-one week I had 11 appointments.
- $80 covers one acupuncture appointment. This is the one thing consistently helping with my fatigue.
- $100 covers an ER visit copay. I've been to the ER five times.
- $180 would cover my heat this month.
- $500 helps with monthly debt payments.
- $1,000 covers my mortgage payment.
Offer practical or emotional support:
- Phone calls and voice memos are very welcome. I have a lot of free time, and text-based communication is currently difficult for me.
- Rides are incredibly helpful while I can't drive or use public transit independently.
- Visits, and light housework if you're up for it, are deeply appreciated. I'm okay on food for now but may need help again soon.
- Share this campaign with anyone in your network who might be willing and able to contribute.
Last year I took on significant debt while caring for my mom and helping her transition into a safe, supportive home. She's doing well now, which I'm very grateful for, but I didn't ask for enough help at the time. That's part of why I'm in a tough spot now.
While there's still no single, clear diagnosis, one doctor described it as a "perfect storm of conditions." I am actively pursuing treatment and learning to use assistive technology. I fully expect to return to work, even if my vision loss becomes permanent. I just need help getting through this short but intense stretch.
Many of you have already shown up for me through meals, rides, calls, Meal Train contributions, and care. I can't adequately express how much that means. Thank you for reading, for sharing, and for supporting in whatever way is right for you. Please don't put yourself in a difficult position to help me. Support within your means, both financially and emotionally.
If you'd like more details or updates, I'm happy to share over the phone. And if you ever need someone to listen, problem-solve, or just sit with you, please feel free to call. I am weirdly having the best mental health of my life right now and listening, validating, or problem solving is the one way I can give back to my community.
With gratitude and love <3
-Michelle
