Aloha, my name is Michelle Briggs, and I am a first-grade teacher at Naʻalehu Elementary School in the Kaʻū community on Hawaiʻi Island.

Hurricane Lala caused devastating damage to my home and classroom. My roof and the inside of my home sustained water damage, I have been without power, and all of the food in my refrigerator and freezer was lost. I am now facing the immediate costs of making my home safe and dry, replacing essential household items, and recovering from the storm.

My classroom was also severely affected. Over many years as an educator, I personally purchased and carefully collected an estimated $30,000–$50,000 worth of books, learning materials, hands-on resources, art supplies, classroom decorations, storage, and other materials for my students. These were not simply supplies—they were the tools I used every day to create a welcoming, engaging place where young children could learn and feel safe.

Funds raised will be used for:

• Emergency roof and interior home repairs

• Water-damage cleanup and restoration

• Replacement of spoiled food and essential household necessities

• Replacement of personally purchased classroom books, supplies, learning materials, and storage

• Other necessary storm-recovery expenses

I am normally the person helping others, especially my students and their families, so asking for help is not easy for me. Many of my relatives, friends, coworkers, and neighbors were also affected by this hurricane, so I do not feel comfortable asking them to carry this burden. I created this fundraiser so the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association can share it with people who are looking for a direct way to help an affected teacher rebuild.

Every donation, regardless of the amount, will help me restore my home and rebuild a safe, joyful classroom for my first graders. If donations exceed my documented personal recovery and classroom replacement expenses, the remaining funds will be used to support student and classroom needs at Naʻalehu Elementary School.
