Hurricane Harvey began dumping rain on our neighborhood Saturday, August 26th. We have a pool, so we started pumping water out of the pool every two hours to make sure the pool didn't overflow into the house. We used sand bags by the back door, just in case the rain came down to fast to drain. We kept pumping out the pool every two hours Saturday night and Sunday night. Monday, the rain slowed down and it looked like we made it through the hurricane without flooding. However, Monday, water started flowing into our neighborhood from Addicks reservoir. By Tuesday morning the water rose to our doorstep and started coming into the house. We were evacuated by a very kind neighbor in a boat. We were able to get out with our daughter, two dogs and a cat in a plastic tote. The house flooded over a foot into the house and remained inaccessible by car for about a week.
We lost almost everything. Three cars were flooded in the driveway are beyond repair, all the furniture and matresses had to be thrown out. All the sheetrock had to be removed 4 feet up the walls. The dryer, water heater, pool equipment and diswasher did not make it. My daughter's laptop was soaked in the flood water. All the kitchen and bathroom cabinets had to be removed. The wood floors in the living room and dining room buckled and had to be removed. The natural gas line in the back yard snapped and was leaking, which had to be dug up for repair, breaking the concrete pad of pool.
There is no flood insurance. Fema has promised $3200. I am not sure how much it is going to cost to repair the house, but someone gave us a $17,000 estimate to just remove sheetrock and spray for mold; we have already done that ourselves, for free.
We will have to move back in to the house as it is and slowly replace walls as we can afford it.
We need money for building supplies, including sheetrock, wall studs, cabinets, and flooring. We also need to replace flooded appliances and furniture. Any donations would be appreciated.
The funds will be spent on repairing the home, including sheetrock, cabinets, insulation, flooring, flooded appliances like the dryer, water heater and pool equipment. We plan on withdrawing funds in the next week to buy sheetrock and insulation to begin repairs ourselves.
Almost everything is gone, but we got out with our family and our pets. For that, we are thankful.
