Michela's Endometriosis Surgery

Donation protected
Hey y'all, my name's Joey. Since the age of 14, my wife, Michela, has been suffering from what we now believe to be severe endometriosis. Her symptoms range from deep, debilitating period cramps and approximately 12 ruptured ovarian cysts to frequent painful bloating and digestive issues.

Since she was a teenager, Michela's had OB/GYNs write her off and simply tell her to "take painkillers days in advance" to prep for the period pain, offer birth control as a solution (she cannot go on BC due to issues with her blood), and have reassured her there is nothing to be concerned about—this level of pain is just how it is. For reference, to currently manage her period pain, she is using a combination of a TENS unit, round-the-clock Midol, and a heating pad, and she can still feel cramping which keeps her bed bound. She plans her social and work calendar around her period and often misses out on things because of it.

Through difficulty conceiving this year, Michela and I began researching endometriosis and saw connection after connection to the things she's been experiencing for the past 12 years. We've learned a lot, especially about how endometriosis is a whole-body disease and can affect every organ in the body. We've also learned it can only be formally diagnosed and remedied through surgery. Most times, it cannot even be seen on imaging. Unfortunately, there is no cure, but surgery with a very skilled excision specialist can greatly reduce the likelihood of recurrence and level of pain, as well as increase fertility.

After a LOT of research, Michela came across a surgeon in Atlanta, GA that is an expert in endometriosis. He is one of the top surgeons in the nation for endometriosis, and his patients see incredible life change from the same surgery Michela needs. He is confident he can reduce Michela's pain significantly and has a clear vision for her surgery.

Unfortunately, this doctor (and nearly every other endo specialist) is out of network with any insurance provider. Insurance companies do not see the surgery Michela needs as necessary, which we can't quite wrap our brains around. There is an upfront booking cost to reserve the surgery date, and in addition to that, they also require a fee of $8,500 due in full at the pre-op appointment. That doesn't include the medical bills post-op based on what actually has to take place during the surgery.

Michela and I will have to spend nearly a week in Atlanta for a day of testing, a couple of days of surgery prep, the surgery itself, and a minimum of 72 hours for recovery. While there are numerous other expenses that come with an endeavor like this, we're setting up a fund just to cover the upfront cost of $8,500 so we can confidently schedule the surgery as soon as possible.

We're believing that God can heal, but God also provides. I'm so burdened for my wife and the things she has to suffer through at a minimum, monthly, but oftentimes on a weekly basis. It's also burdensome as a husband to know there's a deep, deep need for my wife and I'm simply unable to provide for it on my own. If you or anyone you know would be willing to donate, this would truly be a life-changing thing for Michela and our family. We're so so grateful for those who donate, and especially those who will pray for us.
