On August 30, 2024, my brother Michael Chismar was the victim of a terrible car accident and is suffering from a severe brain injury. By the grace of God, he did survive but is still in critical condition. Since the impact was mainly on his right side, he sustained multiple injuries, including a broken right leg, fractured right wrist, a torn ACL and meniscus, road rash, but most concerningly, a severe traumatic brain injury which left him in critical condition. My family, loved ones, and I are devastated by this tragedy. The fact that he survived and continues to fight shows a testament to his strength.
Michael spent the first two weeks in a medically induced coma pending the swelling/bleeding in his brain and his reliance on the ventilator. This Friday (September 27th, 2024) will mark 4 weeks he has been in the ICU. He had an emergency surgery where they had to remove a large section of his fractured skull to reduce the swelling. Hopefully, soon he will be placed in a rehabilitation center to start his recovery journey, so he'll be able to live the long, happy, healthy life he deserves. My family has faithfully stayed by his side, keeping vigil, praying for his recovery, and managing the visits from his many friends, who are truly devastated by his injury and near loss of life, all while trying to understand the medical complexity of his injuries and processing the reality of this event.
For those of you who do not know, Michael is 22 years old and would have been serving his fourth year in the Navy, come this August. He planned after he got out to go to college, to then pursue a career in something he loved. He is admired by all his family and friends, and will always light up any room he walks in. Him being in the navy allowed him to have self discipline and take care of himself by always staying fit and eating healthy. There wasn’t a day that went by when where I would call him and he would tell he’s too busy to talk because he’s at the gym. Him being young plays a big factor because he has a higher chance of recovering!
We genuinely appreciate any support you can provide, whether it's a donation, sharing this campaign with your friends and family, or simply keeping Michael in your thoughts and prayers. Every dollar raised will go towards him and his road to recovery. My family is so humbled by all the love and support we have already received with cards, visits, and prayers. No donation is too insignificant, just like your prayers, every single little bit counts! Continue to wish the best for Michael and keep my family in your prayers. He is so strong and will make it through this!
