Early March we found out that my dad has a rare eye cancer called Choroidal Melanoma. Only about 1400 people have this in a year, and this is a very rare ocular cancer that will likely make Michael legally blind in his left eye or even cause him to lose his eye entirely. Treatment includes direct radiation to his eye, and may also include laser treatment or even resection and in the worst case scenario, enucleation. We have been told that insurance will not cover all medical procedures or expenses, like a lead eye patch that will protect caregivers ( ie my mom) from radiation treatment. Since this cancer is so rare treatment is not offered locally, and treatment requires travel and hotel stays.
We are asking our friends and family for help in this very difficult time. Since treatment will not be covered fully by insurance, we are left with an unforeseen emotional and financial hardship. We have also decided not to sell our house so my dad has a place he is comfortable and familiar with to recover and stay, in the event he loses his vision. Surgery is in late April and is very urgent, so the cancer does not spread locally or systemically. If that occurs, my dad could lose more than his eye.
We know times are tough for everyone, and I don't mean to sound cliche, but in this case every penny really does count. Any amount would be greatly appreciated, as well as prayers as we get my dad through this.
