Michael's Medical Fund

To our Friends and Family,

To those of you who have had the pleasure of knowing my father Michael, you know that he is one of the strongest men out there. And even if you don't know him personally, you know the impact that he has had on my life. No matter what, my dad has always been a fighter. It's with a heavy heart that we are announcing that his fight is coming to an end.

In the past, you would find my father chasing fish. He would check weather patterns, water temperature and listen to rumors of the best spots for Tuna, Sea Bass or Dorado. It was common for him to leave unannounced only to return with food to feed our family and stories to make us laugh. When he wasn't acting as Poseidon, he was using his hands to craft beautiful works of art, many still exist today and many you have probably driven by in Del Mar. He worked hard every single day to build a glowing relationship with my mom and I. The three of us were always at sea, laughing and creating memories that will last an eternity.

My dad has unfortunately been in and out of the hospital for the past several years, battling a multitude of complications. He had been in an accident that caused severe nerve damage, landing him in a wheelchair where he could no longer do what he loved. He was then being treated for Liver cancer at the Anderson Care Center. We had just gotten news in July, 2020 that his liver was responding well to the radiation that had been administered, however, my mother and I truly did not know how sick my dad actually was. On October 21, 2020, my dad was taken to the Emergency Room at Scripps Memorial in La Jolla. His level of responsiveness had rapidly decreased in less than 24 hours. Once admitted to the ER, the doctors found an infection in his blood which was a result of Cirrhosis of his liver. The main cause of Cirrhosis is Hepatitis, which my dad had unfortunately contracted from a bad blood transfusion back in the day. Once he was cleared of Hep-C in 2016, we thought we were on a healthy track for my dad, but the damage to his liver proved to be detrimental.

He has been receiving the best treatment available from the Scripps group over the last week, but his liver and his kidneys were not reacting properly. I saw him for the first time on Sunday, October 25th. He is only able to make out a few words, and I am so grateful that those words include ‘I love you’ and ‘I miss you’. We are currently being prepped for next steps.

Right now, my mom and I aren't sure what the medical bills are going to look like.  My dad is covered by Medicare but we are anticipating up to $5,000 in expenses, even with insurance coverage. There is a balance that has already accumulated, and on Mike’s behalf, relieving our family of any of the medical expenses would mean the world to all of us.  It takes a lot for me to come on here and ask for anything, especially considering the state of the world, but quite frankly, this will be one of the most helpful and supportive things anyone can do for my mom and I moving forward. Anything and everything will make a difference. We are so incredibly grateful for anything you might be able to do to support us at this time.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

All of our love,
Alex and Sara Harnly
