Michael vs. Merkel Cell

Let me start by saying that Michael Pope is probably one of the best human beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He's kind, honest, and a hard-working man that goes out of his way to be of service to others. He isn't without fault. Michael sometimes forgets to close cabinet doors, leaves his shoes laying all over the house, and has to be reminded occasionally to take out the trash. Despite his few faults, I admire him and adore the ground he walks upon. Losing him is unthinkable. 

Michael Pope was diagnosed with Merkel Cell Carcinoma on April 26, 2019. MCC is rare and a very aggressive neuroendocrine cancer. This disease likes to spread rapidly and the prognosis is generally poor. It's important to begin treating the cancer as soon as possible to try and stop it from spreading throughout the body so quickly. 

Michael needs to have surgery to obtain clear margins around the tumor and undergo lymphocyntigraphy to determine which path the tumor drains into. Following surgery, Michael will need to undergo radiation therapy every day for at least 6 weeks. The surgery, recovery, and radiation will be physically stressful, but the financial burden is almost insurmountable. 

I've never done this before, ask for money, but there is a sense of urgency. Michael is the self-employed breadwinner of our family and takes care of all the "important" financial stuff. I'm a teacher on a fixed income that doesn't begin to cover all the expenses. For the next few months, Michael has to focus on beating this cancer. We are in the process of selling cars, a boat, power tools and the house. We're doing everything we can to raise money to cover the loss of income. Add to that the financial stress of coming up with the funds to cover PT scans, surgery, and treatment. It adds up quickly.
