Many of you have been following the journey of my daughter and her family. Unfortunately, there have been complications in the last few months that have led me to ask for all of your help.

Maria and her husband, Brian, are teachers in Leander ISD in Texas. Their son, Michael, was born with a malformed heart that has been managed with surgery and medication since his birth. Due to the rapid growth spurts that occur in the first years of life, the surgeries have had to be close together to replace parts that he is outgrowing. He has needed this next surgery for the last several months, however it has had to be rescheduled due to his health and the health of his siblings. They are hoping to have the surgery at the end of January; however, the pushbacks have created more roadblocks.

First, teachers only get so many days off per year before their pay is docked to bring in substitute teachers. Maria only has two more days for this year due to Michael's appointments so far, which leads to severely reduced income for her family. This is on top of the new year bringing new insurance deductibles at $6,000 per person per year, plus the cost of childcare and normal household expenses.

Second, last year Maria was rear-ended in the family van and was not deemed at-fault. However, insurance recently totaled the van and provided less than $5,000 for a new family vehicle. Unfortunately, with three kids and a dog, the vehicle they need is going to cost much more.

We thank you all for the thoughts and prayers you've sent their way over the last few years. The positivity and support from all of you helps us stay focused as we help them navigate their trials. With the new circumstances, however, we would encourage you to send a monetary donation if you are able, and if not, I would encourage you to pass along their story to as many people as you can. Our first goal is below, though it may be that their need will surpass it in the next few weeks.
