For Michael Sobell, in the name of my Grandad, John Field

My name is Krystie Field and I am raising money for Michael Sobell Hospice in name of my Grandad, John Field who is currently a patient receiving end of life treatment for cancer. My wonderful Nan, his beloved wife, Christine Field, was also an end of life patient at this hospice and she received the best end of life care I could have asked for in February 2022.

As a 26 year old, I would have really struggled to cope with caring for my grandad alone. I am so grateful for the unconditional love, support and affection the nurses and doctors show him, making him feel so special and well looked after. Words will never be enough to express just how amazing the staff are, but they really are special and fantastic at what they do. I call them all real life angels. As grandad often says in disbelief ‘it just doesn’t happen’ when describing and comparing the care he receives to previous hospital admissions. ‘It’s not just here’s your medicine John, it’s a kiss and a cuddle and how are you John’. The little gestures mean the world to us.

3 months prior to this John Field was living his normal every day life doing what John Field does - completely independent with the ability to walk, drive, shop, cook, socialise, even do some office work and be ‘normal’. Michael Sobell has treated my grandad with utmost respect and helped him process this sudden change with love and allowed him to keep his dignity. He truly is so appreciative for everything that has been and still is being done for him.

The hospice care isn’t solely for the patient, but also for the families too. They have provided me with so much support during this really difficult time. I receive art therapy sessions and daily check ins which has made me feel less alone during this heartbreaking time and provided a safe space for me to explore my thoughts and feelings.

Forever appreciative for: The recliner chair next to his bed, allowing me to sit with him all day and all evening comfortably. The open space and natural lighting of the room really supports both mine and his mental health as we get to look out the windows and see the trees, birds & sunshine. The way I get to spend real quality time with him and create precious memories without visiting restrictions or limits.

The love I have for my grandparents and the love they have/had for me is like no other. Nan, I miss you so much. Grandad, I will miss you so much. I hope the fundraising for the hospice makes you proud of your Krystie Lou.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me. All donations will go to the Michael Sobell Hospice Charity and every donation will help.
