After our father, Michael L. McGilvray passed in spring of 2012, we were looking for a way to honor his memory.
He grew up in St. Louis in an economically challenged household with parents who didn’t graduate high school.
Because our father suffered from Hemophilia, a blood condition that does not allow clotting to occur, he couldn’t play sports or run around the neighborhood with kids his age. A small tumble that would leave a healthy child with an egg on their forehead was life threating to him.
As a child, he turned to books to fill his days and his love of learning began early. He worked hard to excel in school and he did just that, becoming the first in his family to graduate high school. He continued onto college, graduate school and a doctoral program, all while working full-time and raising a family. Even with his full-time employment, he couldn’t have made it through these programs without the help of others and the scholarships he recieved along the way.
As you may not know, our father was also Catholic and spent time in the seminary preparing to become a priest. Fortunately for us, he met our mother, Anne McGilvray, while in the seminary and the course of his life was forever changed.
When we saw a 60 Minutes special on St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, we knew this would be a meaningful and very personal way to honor our father.
St. Benedict's, a Catholic school run by Benedictine monks, is located in the inner-city of Newark, NJ. St. Benedict’s is devoted to students in and around Newark. Many of their students have faced significant challenges related to chronic poverty and racism - 78% of their students are of color and 88% of students are on full or partial scholarships.
To us, St. Benedict's is our father’s legacy: his spiritual beliefs, love of learning and giving an opportunity to those, for whom education can change the trajectory of their life.
Our goal of $13,000 is equal to a one year full scholarship to St. Benedict's.
