Michael Hall (aka Duke)-Brain Abscess Recovery

My husband, Mike (also known as Duke by our friends and grandsons) is recovering from a brain abscess caused by a bacterial infection and we need support.

His illness was sudden and severe. Within 24 hours he became paralyzed on his entire left side and was having his first of two lifesaving, emergency brain surgeries. The abscess was located on his right frontal lobe which is what caused his loss of motor function, affected his speech and has caused problems with cognition and memory.

Mike spent 44 days as an impatient at Atrium Health Carolina’s Medical Center in Uptown Charlotte in their neurosurgical unit and rehabilitation unit. He had a PICC line which delivered IV antibiotics for six weeks and slowly began to regain some mobility in his extremities. He is working hard to walk independently (he currently uses a cane and a wheelchair for assistance) and still has very limited use of his left arm and hand.

I have become his full time caregiver as he requires 24 hour assistance to aid in daily tasks and to prevent a fall which could prove to be catastrophic. We attend outpatient rehabilitation multiple days per week and Mike’s attitude has been amazing! His positivity has been my beacon of light through this less than ideal situation.

Mike is a retired NYC police officer who worked full time in Charlotte as a security guard. He was protector and a provider. And now he needs your help as we wait the 12-15 months for disability to make a determination for his benefits. Our savings have all but disappeared since November and your support will make it possible for me to continue to provide the aid that he needs to continue recovering. Brain abscesses are very rare. Roughly 1500-2000 cases are treated in the US annually and there is no way to predict the length and success of a full recovery. We are hopeful and know that we have been given a miracle. Please consider helping us as Mike continues to defy the odds!
