The renowned photographer is in dire straights, disabled & being evicted in LA's rent/housing crisis. Michael needs your help.
You may know Michael Going as the master of the Altered Polaroid. He used tools to hand-alter Polaroid images to create stunning images that look like impressionist paintings. His groundbreaking work has appeared both commercially and in galleries, and is in the collections of museums, corporations and private collectors. He was hired by Sports Illustrated and other magazines, as well as ad campaigns for clients such as Hyatt, Princess Cruises and Polaroid. He did an album cover for Toto, and was featured on the cover of Communication Arts magazine. He is well known in the arts world.
Two years ago Michael suffered a catastrophic cardiac arrest and 3 month hospitalization followed by 3 months of home recovery where he could not work. This episode left him partially disabled: lower back pain, neuropathy makes walking difficult and has limited stamina; it has impacted every area of his life. He must now use a cane or walker, has no car and is broke. Now 76, Michael currently teaches photography to both children and adults at the Barnsdall Art Center in Los Angeles, which is his passion and keeps him going. But LA's skyrocketing housing crisis has finally caught up to his limited income, & he is being evicted from his home of 24 years. He is totally reliant on friends to pack and move, as he can't lift.
But with your help, there is hope: very affordable housing has been located and is the long-term plan. But there is a 10-12 month waiting list. The immediate need is housing in the transitional period that will begin in just a couple weeks when Michael is evicted. Therefore, we need to immediately raise enough money to bridge the difference between what Michael can afford and the rising rental rates for a small apartment for one year. We estimate this difference to be $950/mo, or $11,400 total, plus some moving/storage costs associated with 2 moves.
