Please consider donating to this fund to honor our dad, Michael Farber, in lieu of flowers.
Our family has decided we would like our dad to be buried in an Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA. Michael served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1965. He had some great stories from his time in the military. His wife, Karen will be moving to Iowa shortly.
This process of moving him to Iowa involves paying two different funeral homes to work to get him on a flight to Iowa. Unless there are hidden fees, we have gotten the cost down to $5625. We have some of the funds raised among family, but would be grateful for any additional help we might receive.
Michael Farber, 77, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2018. He was surrounded by his loved ones. Michael was a loving husband for 53 years. He was a faithful and caring father to the five of his kids. He was a dreamer, an inventor, the best chef around, an enthralling storyteller, a world-traveller, a jokester, and a veteran. He was unconditional in his acceptance of others, and he was kind, thoughtful, supportive, smart, and creative. He loved steel drums and classical music, skin diving, adventure, sea food, and specialty coffee. He could find a million uses for duct tape!
He was born in Washington D.C. to his parents, Milton and Helen Farber. He is survived by his brother, John Farber. He grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He served in the U.S. Army before marrying Karen Osberg in San Francisco, CA. They raised their 5 children in Spencer, Iowa. They lived in Coralville, IA for a few years before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2013.
Michael battled against myelofibrosis and congestive heart failure. In 2015 he miraculously survived triple bypass surgery, multiple organ failure, a colectomy, and months of physical therapy. We are so grateful that we got another 3 years to spend with him! We got to be with him for a few more Christmas’s, and then this final Father’s Day. We got to travel as a family to his hometown in Puerto Rico, as well as to a family gathering for a wedding in Colorado.
Michael is survived by his wife, his children, Tanya Thielen, David Farber, Deborah Farber, Kristee Farber, Wendy Bovenmyer and his grandchildren, Bethany, Terah, Nethan, Gage, Nolan, Auri, Asa, Adoniah, Amira, Jakob, Evangeline, Annelise, Isabella and his great-grand children Aria and Avina.
Thank you for all of the messages of love we have received over the past day or so. You have brought smiles amidst our tears, and hope amidst our despair. We are so grateful for your friendship and support during this time.
