Michael D. DeMas Scholarship Fund
Donation protected
Hi everyone! My brother, Steve, his wife Mary Ann, my husband Matt, and I (Kate) are raising money to supplement our contributions for a scholarship in our stepfather's name for the Champion Local Schools district. My brother and I will each contribute $500, and we'd like to offer more to the selected student(s).
Our stepfather, Michael DeMas, passed away last year after a battle with lung cancer. He was a talented musician who played multiple instruments, including accordion, mandolin, and cello - and loved playing bluegrass with his cousins and friends. Mike also sang in the church choir at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.
For over 30 years, Mike worked in education. He was a substitute teacher, and thanks to his skill in American Sign Language, he eventually became an interpreter for the deaf education program at Champion schools in 1999. He interpreted for students whether they were in class, at football practice, or rehearsing for the school play!
After he passed away, many people recounted stories of his kindness. We were amazed at how many people came to his calling hours and realized he had made an impression on many people. We want to pay that kindness forward.
Music and education were important to him. We have received applicants for scholarships through our school district back home. In March, we will be awarding what we can to hopefully multiple students that show an interest in a future in education - specifically in music, deaf or special education. Any contributions made will be given to a selected applicant (or divided among multiple applicants). If there is an odd amount left over, it will start next year's scholarship.
Thank you for your time and donation and for helping us give a gift to those who share Mike's same interests!
