Micah’s Beating Leukemia Fund
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28
After struggling to complete a Tough Mudder the weekend of May 1st and experiencing bruising so severe it made walking difficult, my brother went to a doctor’s appointment on Thursday, May 6th. On Friday, he received a call from his doctor telling him news no person ever wants to receive—“you need to go see the oncologist today, we think you have leukemia.”
Micah was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia that same day.
“Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is also known as chronic myelogenous leukemia. It's a type of cancer that starts in certain blood-forming cells of the bone marrow.
In CML, a genetic change takes place in an early (immature) version of myeloid cells -- the cells that make red blood cells, platelets, and most types of white blood cells (except lymphocytes). This change forms an abnormal gene called BCR-ABL, which turns the cell into a CML cell. The leukemia cells grow and divide, building up in the bone marrow and spilling over into the blood. In time, the cells can also settle in other parts of the body, including the spleen. CML is a fairly slow growing leukemia, but it can change into a fast-growing acute leukemia that's hard to treat.” (Taken from cancer.org)
After having a bone marrow biopsy and a myriad of other tests ran, Micah began oral chemotherapy the evening of his diagnosis. To say this past week has been a whirlwind would be an understatement. I think sometimes it is just something so incredibly difficult to truly wrap your mind around. I do not believe anyone is ready to hear that dreaded “c-word,” especially at the age of 30.
That being said, Micah and his lovely wife Alisha will have costs to cover in the upcoming treatment of this diagnosis. I believe this to be something neither of them should have to worry about—all energy should be conserved for fighting and beating this diagnosis!
There will be a multitude of doctor’s visits, medications, travel expenses, etc. I will continue to update as we learn more and more about what is to come with this fight against leukemia.
Friday, May 7th, 2021 will be a day we will remember as a family for the rest of our earthly lives but we are never without hope! We know God works all things together for good for those who love Him. We know there is a purpose behind this diagnosis and we know God will see us through regardless of anything we experience on this side of eternity. Any amount donated is helpful and greatly appreciated.
In Christ,
Karese
