Hi friends and family! Thanks for checking out the GoFundMe for Micah. We've set this up to help Steven and Hailey cover the medical costs for Micah's 3-4 month-long NICU stay. It takes a lot to keep our Little Bear alive and growing, and as of 1 month, he is already a 1 million dollar baby. We know many of you have been closely tracking his story for weeks now and asked how you can help. We want Steven and Hailey's only concern to be Micah, not medical bills, so we are launching a fundraiser with a goal of $30,000.
Here's a little synopsis of their story:
At 27 weeks gestation, Hailey went to the hospital with signs of pre-eclampsia, which is quite rare so early in the pregnancy. Upon arrival, she was quickly diagnosed and started on magnesium sulfate to prevent seizures. She was also given a first dose of steroids to help develop the baby's lungs in the case of preterm delivery and then transferred to a higher level of care at North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio.
Once she arrived, an ultrasound was done to check on the baby's well-being, where it was discovered there was only an AFI of 2 (the amniotic fluid was almost non-existent). Amniotic fluid is crucial for the development and life of a baby. There were also blood flow problems found in the umbilical cord that were prohibiting his growth, leaving him measuring only 24 weeks old, nearly 3 weeks behind. It was decided that for the baby to survive, delivery was necessary. Hailey finished the full course of steroids, and 48 hours after her diagnosis, she was taken to the OR.
Micah Ray Todd was born on April 27th and weighed just 1 lb 4 oz and was 11.25 inches long.
Steven and Hailey didn't find out the sex of the baby until it was born and were thrilled to hear they had a boy. Months ago, before they found out they were pregnant, Steven chose the name "Micah" which means "Who else is like our God?" They wouldn't know how truly remarkable the meaning was until Micah made his appearance. It has proven to be a constant source of comfort. God has known Micah and the circumstances surrounding his birth and was not caught off guard. He has been sustaining Micah in remarkable ways and, without any doubt, we can say there is no one else like God.
Micah was immediately rushed to the NICU after delivery, but Steven briefly saw him and held his hand. Hailey was able to see Micah 24 hours later on Thursday after she had stabilized. In the NICU, Micah was hooked up to cardiac monitors, had an umbilical line running with fluids, was intubated, had an OG tube and was under bilirubin lights in his isolette. His tiny body was covered in wires and tubes, all keeping him alive.
He is still hooked up to quite a few things but has been making wonderful progress as he grows and develops in the NICU. Each day is a process full of unexpected and expected triumphs and setbacks.
Hailey and Steven held Micah for the first time when he was 3 weeks old - a huge milestone!
Micah still has a lot of growing to do in the coming weeks and months, but we are hopeful he will be discharged around his due date: July 23rd. Until then, Hailey and Steven are making daily trips to the hospital to visit and help care for Micah, even as they return to work and full-time school (Steven). They've got a whole lot on their plate right now, and our goal is to help alleviate some of their financial burdens.
From our whole family: Thank you for your generous support and encouragement! We couldn't do this without our community and that's you!
