Mia the Mutt's Surgery
Mia is an eight month old Border Collie/Queensland Heeler mix we adopted from the local shelter at eight weeks. She came to us a big nipper and chaser, with some possessiveness. We've worked hard to get through this; she no longer bites your hands and feet or chases you, she shares water with our other dog and cats.
Mia has always torn cloth toys apart. After realising this, we cleaned up any small toys with stuffing and squeakers in them so as to prevent accidents. About two months ago, she found a small toy that had been missed (perhaps squished under her kennel), and swallowed it. We noticed she had stopped eating, but thought it was the deworming medication that had conveniently overlapped her eating the toy. But the toy had blocked her intestines and she had to have surgery to remove it. It took a huge financial toll (I am entering my first year of college and money is tight), but it was the only option to keep her alive. My family has taken great care to remove any toys that could possibly be swallowed, and to get rid of any toys with squeakers in them, much to the dismay of our other dog, Apollo. (The dogs now only get large toys that can't be broken down; rope toys, balls, tires, etc.) Once again, Mia somehow found a toy that had been hidden on our back porch, with a squeaker. Once again her system is blocked and she needs surgery but my family does not have the funds. My loans only pay half of my tuition and now there are two sets of rent to pay. Any extra money donated will go directly to the Tracy Animal Shelter that Mia came from.
