Mission Statement
This short film explores the tension between cultural identity, personal values, and the pressure to conform. Through Mia's journey, we delve into themes of sexuality, self-worth, and the struggle to balance freedom with staying true to oneself in a world that demands change.
I believe people of color don’t see themselves represented enough in media, especially in coming-of-age stories. Our white counterparts have countless films that reflect their journeys, but I never saw myself in the American "classics" I grew up watching. This film is my way of changing that.
This story is deeply personal—not just inspired by my own college experience but also by those around me. Traditional Caribbean upbringing teaches discipline, family, and restraint, but in a college environment, those values are challenged. American culture often equates freedom with self-expression, while Caribbean households root morality in right and wrong. Navigating these conflicting worlds can feel isolating, confusing, and at times, even exhilarating.
Beyond the story, I want to fully immerse the audience in the era and emotions that shaped this experience—including the music. I’ve been in the studio working on a soundtrack that captures the vibe and music style of my time in school, bringing an authentic sound to this world.
I want high school students to laugh and dream about the possibilities of college life, and for those who have lived it to look back and reminisce. More than anything, I want this film to provide the representation we rarely see—a coming-of-age story that truly reflects us.
Synopsis:
In her freshman year at a prestigious college, Mia, a striking Dominican woman, is thrown into a world where sex, drugs, and reckless decisions are the norm. On the outside, she’s everything her peers desire—hypersexualized, confident, and always at the center of attention. But beneath it all, she’s still a virgin, raised in a strict religious household where sexuality was something to be hidden and controlled.
As she navigates this new environment, Mia is torn between the seductive freedom of college and the weight of her upbringing. Pressured to abandon the values that shaped her, she struggles with identity, self-worth, and the fear of losing herself. With each encounter and each reckless decision, the line between who she was and who she’s becoming blurs.
Now, Mia must decide: will she embrace this new world, risking the loss of her integrity, or will she hold onto the cultural roots that define her, even if it means being an outsider? In this raw coming-of-age story, she must discover what it truly means to be free in a world that constantly pressures her to conform.
Tone:
The film should feel raw, intimate, and nostalgic, capturing the highs and lows of self-discovery. It’s a coming-of-age drama with moments of levity, but the emotional weight of Mia’s journey remains central. The tone should reflect her internal conflict—both the allure of freedom and the burden of tradition.
Visuals & Shots:
Diverse, bold fashion that reflects personal identity—Mia’s outfits could evolve as she starts embracing or questioning her values.
Gritty, vibrant campus visuals with naturalistic lighting, handheld shots for realism, and stylized, colorful party scenes.
Intimate close-ups to capture unspoken emotions, mixed with energetic, wide shots to showcase the social environment.
