The Miami iPrep Mural will be a 2,000 square foot interactive seascape uplifting the importance of the native marine ecosystem to children K-12, providing the opportunity for students to be inspired by art and marine science. This mural is dedicated to education and will honor representative Kristin Jacobs and her significant role in protecting our environment and furthering her mission of education. We are honored to pay homage to this mission with this interactive educational mural sparked by the Shark Allies  NoFinFL campaign, which Kristin championed. We are excited to bring the mural to life, titled "A Sea of Connections," in March 2021 with Canvas of the Wild and artist Kelly Quinn.

Community Impact:
-Engage children in biology and conservation through digital touchpoints created by software designer, Blake Wheeler.
-Students will paint the mural alongside wildlife artist, Kelly Quinn for an interactive experience.
-Art classes and curriculum-based exercises around biology and art will be facilitated by Canvas of the Wild during the mural's creation.
-Hosting local scientists from the University of Miami Shark Tagging and Shark education for workshops with students.

Scope:
To design and create an interactive 2,000 sq. foot mural on the iPrep Academy school building located on Biscayne Blvd. in Miami, Florida. the goal of this artwork is to inspire K-12 children through an immersive artistic and digital experience that will guide them through the coastal and pelagic waters of Florida, introducing them to topics around coral restoration, endangered species, and the importance of sharks in our oceans.

The project will utilize realism and digital educational touchpoints that can be accessed in person through a phone or at home by a computer, to reinforce the importance of protecting our oceans. Our team will also be hands-on with the students, with Covid-19 guidelines at the forefront, immersing the children in art-making through workshops, live-mural painting, and engaging them with local scientists from the University of Miami Shark Tagging and Shark Education.

The artwork will also pay respects to the late Kristin Jacobs who dedicated her life to protecting our environment and facilitating education for future generations, emphasizing her quote "Protecting the earth and our oceans is not just a choice, it’s our obligation to those that will follow us.” - Kristin Jacobs.

Kristin Jacobs was a mother, a friend, and a protector. As a Representative of the Florida House, she fought for our community's rights, dedicating her life to education and conservation. She was a voice for the clean waters act, lobbying for greater land protections, and the No Fin Florida bill, also known as the "The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act," which became law on September 18, 2020, making Florida the 14th state to stand up against the shark fin trade. Like Kristin, we believe in a better future created through community and education.

The Story So Far:
Our team and partners have already dedicated over 200 hours in preparation for this mural, with an initial round of funding by Shark Allies successfully jumpstarting the planning process and purchasing the first round of supplies. Now we need your help to continue the creation of this interactive project!

-Phase one will be focused on painting the pelagic species on the two main walls, 48 feet long each, with the coral reef walls beginning to be designed and color-blocked in preparation for phase two. During this phase, the database will be tested with students and teachers.

-Phase two will take place in April 2021, and the primary focus of this stage is to complete the coral seascape on the two exterior walls connected to the ramp, each 28 feet long, located in front of the building. The database will begin to be filled with imagery from the mural and have scientists from Shark Education and UMiami Shark Tagging input research and information.

-Phase three will occur in April/May 2021, and be attained if we can reach our GoFunMe goal. This project's full vision is to create an immersive experience, including painting the ceiling of the building and creating two more reef scenes on the interior portion of the 28-foot walls to give the effect of walking into the seascape so children can be engrossed in nature everyday as they come to school.
