ECI and Magic City K9 dog rescue program! Let's help these guys and the pups live just a little better! As most of you know Martin has been a part of the dog program since it started at ECI four years ago. Over that time the non profit owned by Dee Hoult and run by right hand Elise Lorenzo have rescued, rehabilitated, trained and successfully adopted over 115 pups! Most coming from kill shelters. That’s amazing since the program started with 5 pups. The work that Magic City K9 alongside the ECI inmates is tireless. The guys live with two men and a full size dog in 12x8 cells. The dorms they live in are not air conditioned! Thats right! In South Florida they are not even permitted to have small fans in their cells. They currently have a water fountain for 60 men and 14 pups, 26 of those men are dog trainers the rest care for the pups, help clean and maintain a positive environment for the dogs to settle in and focus on the work ahead. The water fountain’s are not in good working condition and the compressor is not made for the work load so the guys are drinking warm water with no access to ice or anything that would offer relief. Regardless of the obstacles they stay on schedule and make sure the pups get all the fan time they need when not locked In the cells.
So far we have raised enough money for a new TV and accessories, this allows the men to watch educational training videos. They are actually earning hours and certifications that eventually label them as advanced professional dog trainers! Because of the success of the program we have been allowed some amenities. We were approved for commercial grade patio style chairs to sit on instead of 4 steal backless benches! The guys have been so appreciative I cannot begin to tell you what a difference it has made in their lives.
We were also able to take $1500 of what has been donated and gave it to Magic City K9. Dee was able to buy the guys all training leashes and pay for the surgery of Queenie, a little sweetheart corgi who was injured getting to close to a bully mix. I know just how grateful she is for each and everyone of you!!!
As I mentioned before we are almost half way to our goal which is fantastic! The next donations will go towards a much needed Commercial grade ADA water fountain with refrigerated water.
A water chiller for the water fountain (necessary because of the temperature inside the dorm)
A Commercial Ice machine (which is unprecedented that they are allowing)
Paint so the guys can paint the dorm to reflect the Magic City K9 red, black and white with their logo. It is amazing the prison is allowing the men to do this.
A graduation fund so the guys can get food to celebrate their graduation event, which includes, certificate ceremony and actual AKC judged competition. Then the pups are off to their forever homes!
Anything above and beyond would go directly to the Magic City non profit to help pay for things like vet bills, food, equipment, medicine and many other needed items. The food bill alone for 14 large dogs is very expensive as you can imagine.
Let’s come together for Martin so he can give back to a program and a dorm, that we as his family know saved his life in there! He has lost so much, having a grateful pup lick his face on a bad day is something not many that are incarcerated get. The Magic City family and our family are forever grateful for the time you have taken to learn about the great things these men are doing. You cannot imagine the light it has created in such a dark place. All because of the program Dee created and the donations you have made.
