For those who aren't familiar with the Open Books Prison Book Project, our mission is simple: we send books to prisoners in the state of Florida. The Prison Book Project has operated since 2000 and has sent some 20,000 books to prisoners throughout the state of Florida. In 2007, we opened a not-for-profit bookstore to help generate income for the Prison Book Project, but most of the project's donations come directly from the public. As of 2016, we are a 501 (c)3 non-profit. All donations are tax-deductible.
We operate on a tight budget with nearly every penny we raise going directly to buy books, postage and supplies used to send books to prisoners. The vast majority of books sent are educational books (dictionaries, language books, African American history, etc). All books are sent at no charge to the prisoner. Since our inception, we've relied on the generosity of our all-volunteer collective, our local community, and like-minded supporters throughout the country.
Since our first days, we've benefited tremendously from an incredibly generous group of donors. If we're successful, this campaign will result in our biggest one-time donation.
We thank you all so much for donating to the Open Books Prison Book Project .
