What wouldn’t a mother do for her children? Being a mother may arguably be the toughest, most rewarding role in life. Being the mother of a child with a developmental disability is equally as rewarding yet perhaps even tougher. This is the story of Mia and the difficult, humbling, and ridiculously rewarding journey that we share as a family.
As many of you parents of children with developmental disabilities know well, it can be scary to be thrust into the role of having to discover how to meet your child’s needs. There is no playbook. There is no roadmap. Nonetheless, we are expected to get the job done. Unfortunately, even the most prepared and educated parents will find themselves feeling confused and frustrated.
There were many challenges along the way to helping Mia. As a parent, I had to become an expert in how to navigate the system. I had to knock on every proverbial door to get her needs met. And through it all, I learned that there are far too many cracks in our system; far too little services available. That’s where Mia’s Place comes in.
I was inspired to create Mia’s Place for my children, Mia and Landon, and for your children, too! We wanted a safe, welcoming place where kids could go to learn and socialize; a place to help all kids--those with and without neurodevelopmental disorders--to integrate; a place to break down barriers and raise up families. A place for Mia. A place for you. A place for all of us. That place is Mia’s Place!
Mia’s Place is unique. It is a custom-designed recreational and educational experience that is both soothing and stimulating. I am determined to create a safe, clean and comfortable environment that families can enjoy, a place that all children can thrive and engage in social interaction, skill building, and educational play!
In addition to a recreational and educational center, Mia’s Place is a place where parents can gather for socialization, guidance, and community support for all families.
I believe Mia’s Place will make a positive impact not only on children in our community, but also on the dynamics of the family. We need your help to make this a reality!
Your involvement will help provide equipment, additional activities, and programs needed for this to be successful!
Special thank you to Matthew Salvaggio for donating his time to help us make this special video!
