Hello everyone. My name is Mia. I am almost six years old and I was born with bilateral profound hearing loss. This means that I have absolutely no hearing at all in both ears, just like my Mummy. My only chance of escaping a world of silence was to have cochlear implant surgery. I was implanted at 11 months old and fitted with cochlear implants that helps me to be part of the hearing world but sadly it is not a cure. Without my CI processors, I am still a profoundly deaf child and will never hear as well as other hearing children.
This is why the award winning charity for deaf children, AVUK, has become a vital part of my life. Their techniques and approach has helped me to achieve more than you can imagine. I started at eighteen months old with just a few words and after just a couple of sessions and coaching my parents in the use of Auditory Verbal strategies and techniques in everyday activities and play, my speech and language literally sky rocketed. I now have an equal start in life as my hearing friends.
I have been so incredibly fortunate to receive this kind of support and I feel that every deaf child deserves the same opportunities that I had. Early intervention is absolutely crucial in the outcomes for deaf children like myself. Without this, they are highly likely to underachieve at school and at higher risk of isolation, bullying and social exclusion. Therefore this cause is very close to our hearts.
Do you want to join me in making a difference in the lives of deaf children? I am planning to cycle for 5 miles a day for one week (or even more) to raise money in aid of Auditory Verbal UK. I am so excited to be part of this amazing experience. We will of course keep you updated with our cycling journey. Every donation will help other families with deaf children gain access to speech therapy.
